I just finished listening to "Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker." It was interesting enough to write a blog post about it. Here goes...
"Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker" is listed as historical fiction, but most of the elements I looked up about Elizabeth Keckley and the time and events illustrated in the book I found them to be true. So, overall, I was very impressed with the level of research Jennifer Chiaverini did to write the book.
The book may not appeal to those who already know a lot about Elizabeth Keckley's person and history and don't care for the genre of historical fiction. As for me, I was unfamiliar with it and found it to be extremely interesting. Of course, I listened to the book. I do not have the time or patience to read books. Listening as I do chores and create artwork is perfect for me.
I looked at some of the negative reviews about the book, calling it dry and listing too many historical facts, etc., and I agree that the book is full of historical information. Therefore, reading it might be dry for some..
Overall, Jennifer Chiaverini did an excellent job illustrating the life and character of t Elizabeth Keckley. I think the author's depiction of May Todd Lincoln made much more sense than the "crazy lady" depiction I've heard over the years.
Next, I'm interested in listening to the book written by Elizabeth Keckley, "Behind the Scenes: Or, Thirty Years a Slave, and Four Years in the White House."
